When I was in my mid-20’s, I tried a lot of different jobs in an attempt to see where I ‘fit’. Feeling flaky and insecure, I called my beloved mentor to bemoan this fact but she was unavailable. Imagine my angst when her snarky receptionist made a comment about my new office phone number. "Boy, Sandy, I'd better start writing your work number in pencil." I hung up and burst into tears. When my mentor called back, she simply and very matter-of-factly said, "Oh sweetie, you're not a flake. You're just a limb dweller."
“…A what?” I stuttered mid-sob.
She explained to me that there are two types of people in the world: Trunk holders, those who happily hold onto the trunk of the tree for years. They are completely content to work at the same job for 30 years, following the normal, prescribed path. Then there are the Limb Dwellers. “ We’re the ones who like to shimmy out on the limb and hold on for dear life. It’s terrifying, we’re out there swinging in the wind. But (and she paused very dramatically)…oh, what a view!”
Tracy gave me permission to explore new careers and opportunities without any shame or angst. I had a new way of looking at my adventurous spirit (vs. being “flaky”). It was a life changer. One story. One comment. No judgement.
My job? I sit on the limb with you. Sometimes it’s getting unstuck and scooting out further on that limb or hopping up to the next branch. Whatever it is, I'm right there with you, 100 percent. Learn more by reading my blog posts below…
